President Buhari’s Failure To Address Protesters Led To Loss Of Lives And Properties-Alaafin Of Oyo Reveals
The Alaafin, Oba Lamidi while delivering his speech during the stakeholders meeting with the State Governor and other government officials at the House of Cheifs, Agodi Secretariat Ibadan, stressed that, if President Muhammadu Buhari had addressed the protesters on time, the situation will have been well managed.
The stakeholders’ meeting was purposely organized by the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, to discuss the way forward on the demands of the ENDSARS protesters, which had in attendance the State Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde, his Deputy, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Leye Oyebade, the State Commissioner for Police, CP. Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, the Garrison Commander of the Two Division of the Nigeria Army, Barrister General. Soji Ogunsugba.
The highly preferred traditional ruler said, what we have witnessed today is the beginning of a phenomenal, it is the failure of the authority to rise to the occasion that led to the loss of lives and destructions of properties that we witnessed in the aftermath of the ENDSARS protests.
Alaafin stressed that the youths have been denied of their rights, the peaceful protest of the youths have shown us the elders what we are lacking, they showed us through the protests that they are well organized, they have shown us comportment, they organized the protests to the amazement of all of us.
The monarch said that one thing that is significant about the protests was the way the youths have comported themselves during the protests, we saw the way they were waving the Nigeria flag, singing the national anthem, and every one of us was moved.
Alaafin said, that the ordering of the military by the authority’s in power to use live bullets against the youths, which led to the killings of some of them is what resulted in the destruction of properties as witnessed in Lagos State and some other affected States across the Country.
Alaafin said that the traditional institution has little role to play on the matter at hand, he said, your Excellency, we can’t play a major role on the matter at hand, the State and Federal Government were not listening to the agitations of these children when they were calling on all of us, and that has resulted to what we have witnessed.
“Your Excellency, I will put my thoughts, suggestions, and reactions on papers and forward them to you for proper documentation, so that the government can make good use of them.
“So calling all of us together to talk to them, to calm them down is not really our duty, but I can assure you that we will do our best, I think the government is not calling for the reoccurrence of such sad incident because I see it as a duty’s of our government at all levels to speak and listen to those children so as to provide a proper implementation of their agitations.
“You know me as a historian, and as a storyteller, this similar situation has happened both in South Africa, where the innocent protesters were been killed, the people of China never had it good since what has happened to them since then.
Alaafin said, the government at all levels must listen to those youths and also calm them down, because the refusal of the government to listen to those children and address them led to the persistent protests, which resulted in the Lekki Toll Gate Shooting, that killed many of them, and this also led to the destruction of properties that happened almost across the nation.
Oba Lamidi Adeyemi also added that the Oyo State is very lucky to have the likes of Governor Makinde as the Governor of the State, he noted that his timely addressed and solidarity with the protesters led to the minimal loss of properties in the State, if not, Oyo also will have recorded a massive loss of lives and properties.
